Time to Move to Windows 7 – Dump Windows XP

Microsoft’s Windows 7 is a very slick computer operating system. If you are wondering about the benefits of moving to a Windows 7 computer from Windows XP here are several reasons for making the transition. And given the significant benefits of Windows7 over Windows XP I would recommend doing it sooner rather than later.

  1. Age - Windows XP is a 10 year old Operating System. It was originally released in 2001 and is no longer available at the retail level or installed on new computers. Consider the computer you were using 10 years ago. Would you still want to be using that computer hardware today?
  2. Security - Windows 7 is more secure than Windows XP. Improved security was built in to the very core of Windows 7 and includes processes that prevent unwanted or malicious applications from even running without the user’s approval.
  3. Stability - Windows 7 is more stable than Windows XP. After running Windows 7 for over 20 months on several different computers in my lab and working on well over 200 client computers running Windows 7 I have not seen a single occurrence of the dreaded Blue Screen – also commonly known as the Blue Screen of Death or BSOD. Unfortunately, the BSOD occurs more frequently on Windows XP than most people would like.
  4. Performance - Windows 7 provides better performance due to more optimized programming and better use of available memory and hardware.
  5. Ease of Use – Windows 7 is more user-friendly with enhancements that let users do more with fewer clicks.
  6. Ease of Updates – Windows 7 has a “Windows Update” link right on the Start Menu. The Win 7 Update process also provides more information and is more user friendly
  7. Useful Utilities – Windows 7 has more useful utilities than were ever included in Windows XP. These include: SnipIt, Windows DVD Maker, Desktop Gadget Gallery, Windows Media Center and more.
  8. Connecting – Windows 7 is much better at recognizing new devices, new network connections and newer technology making it much easier to stay connected.
  9. Maintenance - Windows 7 is easier to maintain as it performs tasks such as ongoing file defragmentation in the background (no more need to run DEFRAG) and keeps data and programs segmented more effectively. Windows 7 allows for managing and cleaning up Temp Files more easily and provides easier access to system maintenance tasks.

So, if you are feeling frustrated with your computer, are experiencing continuing degradation in performance, are running into ongoing security issues, experiencing reoccurring Blue Screens or some combination of these items, it’s time to make the move to Windows 7. Especially if you use your computer for business or any environment where there is a dollar value on your time.
